MIAMI -- Florida Power and Light crews and repair workers are working to prepare Miami-Dade County schools to reopen Thursday. On Tuesday, FPL crews worked to restore power to Highland Oaks Middle School, one of 36 Miami-Dade County schools that remained without electricity."We're just waiting on the power. FPL is out here as we speak. If not, we have enough generators to get the building going. Regardless, we're ready to go for Thursday," Highland Oaks Middle School Principal Sally Alayon said.
"We will be open on Thursday, all Miami-Dade public schools, all offices, all evening programs, all activities, sports programs, will resume on Thursday of this week," Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Dr. Rudy Crew said.School buses, lunch services and school sports will all resume Thursday, as well."I think that integrating (makeup days) as quickly into the instructional day and year, as opposed to putting them at the end of the year, is my preference," Crew said.Ruined carpets and ceiling tiles will be replaced. A school district crew is working to clean the grounds and repair the roof at Highland Oaks Middle School. The FCAT might be pushed back for a week, NBC 6's Hank Tester reported."Students will also be able to move the date on which they were originally scheduled to take the SAT, move it back into the fall, even if they were scheduled for an earlier admission," Crew said.Parents, teachers and some students are ready for school to go back into session."The parents are anxious. I think everybody's anxious to get back to some normalcy," Alayon said."It's good to get them back into school really. It's good to get them back into what they normally have to do. We still don't have power, but I'm happy that they get to go back to school and that they have to start their routine again. But, we still have to wait," one parent said.
