An unusually strong storm will continue to affect the region Tuesday night and Wednesday. Strong thunderstorms will pound the area between Baghdad and Kuwait City this evening just ahead of the storm's cold front, then these areas will turn much cooler overnight with winds shifting into the southwest and west. For Wednesday, the worst of the storm will shift east into Iran, where torrential, flooding rains will be unleashed along the west and southwest slopes of the Zagros Mountains and snow will blanket higher areas. Rain and mountain snow will also fall in northern Iraq with some showers south to Baghdad. Southern Iraq, Kuwait and northern Saudi Arabia will be dry Wednesday with cool, gusty winds causing areas of blowing sand and dust, although sandstorms will not be as widespread nor severe as on Tuesday. Showers will linger from western Iraq to parts of Lebanon and Israel. As the storm moves away from the region, the rest of the week and the weekend will be dry, probably without widespread sandstorms. It will be unusually cool at first, then warmer.Copyright 2003 by NBC6.net. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
