MIAMI -- As gas prices soar, some people are opting to vacation closer to home -- and South Florida offers a variety of options. In the wintertime, the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne charges more than $600 per night. In the summer, rooms there go for about $260."The summer is one of the best times to visit a luxury resort like the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne because you're going to have values you don't get any other time of the year," said Michelle Payer of the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne. For $269 per night, the resort's Reconnect package provides luxury accommodations in a Ritz-Carlton room, a full breakfast buffet for two, free valet parking and a gift from the hotel when you check in.AAA said that more than 60 percent of summer travelers are traveling closer to home this summer, but a night at the Ritz-Carlton feels like you're on a tropical island with one of the best beaches in the country right outside your window, NBC6's Joel Connable reported. On the other side of Alligator Alley is another luxury resort where prices drop as the temperatures rise. The La Playa Beach and Golf Resort in Naples costs only about $170 per night in the summer. On normally pricey Captiva Island, the South Seas Island Resort has summer rates as low as $135 per night. For South Floridians who want to stay locally, the Grove Isle Hotel and Spa sits on an island in Coconut Grove. Some rooms are 25 percent off during the summer. For more summer travel deals, visit the Departure Lounge.
