MIAMI -- Passes for the new express lanes being built on Interstate 95 go on sale beginning Tuesday. As thousands of people know, the stretch of Interstate 95 between downtown Miami and the Golden Glades Interchange is a nightmare during rush hour. The Florida Department of Transportation's 95 Express project will add two new toll lanes.According to a promotional video for the project, it could cut travel times in half from Miami to Fort Lauderdale.
"No more HOV; this is going to provide a better option for motorists," said Tish Burgher of the DOT.The express lanes will be separated from regular travel lanes by flexible posts. The lanes are intended for longer trips, and access to them will be limited. The toll lanes will use "congestion pricing," or variable pricing."During peak travel times, it will be more expensive," Burgher said. "If you travel at 1 o'clock in the morning, then it's not going to cost you much to use the lane. If you travel at 7 o'clock in the morning in the direction where the heaviest traffic is, you'll pay more."Electronic message boards along the route will display the current toll being charged. There's no charge for emergency vehicles, registered hybrid vehicles, registered car pools or motorcycles.People without SunPasses will be photographed and receive tickets through the mail. The first stage of the project is northbound only, but the 95 Express will eventually operate in both directions all the way to Interstate 595.The DOT is hoping to start the 95 Express in August. SunPasses for the toll lanes can be purchased for $5 starting Tuesday at Publix stores.
