Glendale, AZ -- (Sports Network) - Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor was named the 2007 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Sunday, as league commissioner Roger Goodell and Payton's widow Connie presented Taylor with the award prior to the Super Bowl.It was the first time in the 37-year history of the award, which recognizes a player's off-the-field community service as well as playing excellence, that the presentation was made on live TV. Taylor, Miami's all-time career sack leader and a six-time Pro Bowl selection, is responsible for launching both the Jason Taylor Foundation, for South Florida children in need, and the Jason Taylor Children's Learning Center, a recreational and educational hub for hospitalized children, among other charitable endeavors.
"I am extremely humbled to receive an award bearing Walter Payton's name, as he embodied everything an NFL player should aspire to be, both on and off the field," Taylor said. "This is without question one of the more special moments of my career." Drew Brees of New Orleans and San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson shared the award in 2006, while Colts quarterback Peyton Manning was honored in 2005. The other four finalists for this year's award were Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward, Chiefs guard Brian Waters and Cowboys tight end Jason Witten.
