Mother Founds Organization To Care For People With Disabilities

Raising a child with disabilities is a daunting task that many parents do each day, and oftentimes the children continue to need care into their adult years.

Teresa Caprio's daughter, Toni, has developmental disabilities that affect her both physically and mentally.

"(Caring for her) takes money. It takes time. It takes endurance. It takes strength. It takes youth," Caprio said. "It's hard."

Her daughter is now 35 years old, and Caprio faces a difficult question.

"The parents who are raising special needs (children) reach a point when they get older. Things happen. They get old. They get sick, unfortunately, or pass away, and then what happens?" she said. "Who takes care of them?"

This question prompted Caprio to start the Rainbow Guardian Foundation, which is now opening its first group home in Sunshine Ranches for people with developmental disabilities. At the TLC Ranch, which stands for Tender Loving Care, they will receive quality care tailored to their disabilities.

"I would like to provide for other kids like (Toni) with multiple disabilities -- a quality facility with quality-trained staff, a family-type of an organization with implemented programs," Caprio said.

Caprio's passion for this project continues to grow daily.

"The passion of the parent wanting to do this for not only her child but for other kids is the fuel that keeps me going," she said.

Although she is determined, Caprio said she still lacks more money for the program.

"Funding our charity is extremely important," she said. "You can do anything, you can accomplish anything, if you have the finances behind you to do it."

The Rainbow Guardian Foundation plans to open more group homes. The first home is already providing relief to Caprio and many parents like her.
