NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- Four months after a North Miami Beach business owner was gunned down in his store, three teens have been arrested and charged with murder.
Police said Lazaro Esteban Cortes Jr., Emmanuel Jean and Richard Petit robbed shopkeeper Mohammad Ayoub for $11 in cash and then shot him to death.
It happened on May 30 at Dollar & Beauty Supply Store.Cortes and Jean, both 19, are charged as adults. They face charges of armed robbery, first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. The third suspect, 15-year-old Petit, is also charged with first-degree murder.Police said the three teens originally planned to rob a cell phone kiosk at a nearby mall. When that plan failed, they turned to Ayoub's store."They went out that day intending to commit a robbery. They definitely had robbery on their mind," said Michael Bolinger of North Miami Beach police. "They had discussed it the day before. They had several targets that they were looking at. For one reason or another, opportunities did not present themselves. So ultimately the crime that we are discussing now was a crime of opportunity where other plans that they had fell through."Police said they believe Jean was the shooter and Cortes acted as the lookout.Shortly after the shooting, surveillance video from a nearby store was released to the public. Police have not said if that video helped lead them to the suspects.
