FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The family of a woman who police said killed herself in front of her baby is now fighting to keep the baby away from her father.

Priscilla Estupinan, 18, was found dead inside a Hollywood motel room with her uninjured 4-month-old daughter by her side. Her boyfriend and reported father of the child, Darwin Quintanilla, 19, was shot in the upper torso, NBC 6's Sharon Lawson reported.

Quintanilla, who survived the incident, allegedly told police that Estupinan shot him, then shot herself.

"It was only her and him and a baby who doesn't talk," said Heidi Estupinan, Priscilla's mother.

Family members said Quintanilla and Estupinan had a tumultuous relationship, but they said they never thought it would come to this.

"They were always fighting, all the time, all the time, and I told him and I told her, 'Leave it alone. This relationship is not meant to be,'" Heidi Estupinan said.

Family members said they did not believe Estupinan would ever take her own life.

In court on Tuesday, Quintanilla, who has been released from a local hospital, pleaded with the state to get his child back, but the court awarded temporary custody to the child's maternal grandparents.

"When she had gave birth, not even the dad was there. It was me, her dad, my mother, my sister. We were all in the room, watching her give birth to this baby. He wasn't even around, because they were actually not even together. He insinuated that it might not have been his," Heidi Estupinan said.

Quintanilla had no comment.

Authorities continue to investigate the case, and are waiting on an autopsy report to determine what happened.

A final decision on custody of the baby is expected later this month.
