MIAMI -- A panel reviewing a children's book about Cuba has voted to recommend to the superintendent to keep the Spanish-language book on the shelves at one Miami-Dade County school. The dispute started when a parent of a student at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas Elementary School complained to the school board that the book -- called "Vamos a Cuba," or "A Visit To Cuba" -- does not depict an accurate life in Cuba.Previous Images
Some Miami-Dade County school board members then voted to have the book removed, saying it is full of "prejudices" and "distortions.""It's important that we teach our children the truth about what happens to people throughout different moments in time in life. In reality, similar sensitive issues have been dealt with as it applies to the plight and struggle of other people, and in those cases, books that are representative of that struggle have been placed in libraries," said school board member Frank Bolanos. The committee's recommendation will be forwarded to Superintendent Rudy Crew, who will make the final decision.
