Former Ultimate Fighting Champion Trains Police Officers

A Brazilian Jiu Jitsu expert is training for the fight of his life in South Florida, while also teaching local law enforcement officers how not to use their guns.

At 6 feet 1 inch tall and 180 pounds, Royce Gracie might not look it, but he is one of the most feared fighters in the world. Eleven years ago, Gracie dominated the Ultimate Fighting Championship, a no-holds-barred competition of mixed martial arts.

Now, Gracie, who is almost 40, is getting back inside the cage that made him famous.

"They have a lot of students over here in Miami from all different sizes, from 300 and 400 pounds to 175, 180s," Gracie said.

Gracie trains inside a special room at a Jiu Jitsu school in North Miami Beach run by two of his former students.

"You win the fight in the training camp, not on the day of the fight," Gracie said.

Gracie is challenging the current champion, Matt Hughes, whom many consider the greatest UFC welterweight.

"He's a good striker, a very good wrestler," Gracie said.

While he is spending hours every day conditioning, Gracie is also taking time to train South Florida law enforcement officers, showing them how to take down suspects before reaching for a weapon.

"This is an eye-opener for guys, especially police officers who have never really been on the ground," said Victor Gatell, of the Miami-Dade County Police Department.

U.S. Marshals, U.S. soldiers and FBI agents also show up for the classes.

"We have people of all different body types, sizes and weight, so we try to teach techniques, again, minimizing use of force," said Kevin Crawford, an FBI instructor.

Skill once made Gracie a champion, not size or strength.

Gracie will fight Hughes on May 27 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Tickets range from $50 to $1,000, and organizers expect a sold-out crowd of 20,000. You can also catch the fight on Pay-Per-View.
