DAVIE, Fla. -- A big debate was brewing in the Florida State House on Wednesday.Lawmakers are trying to decide whether Key lime pie or pecan pie should be the official Florida state pie.

"I think it's ridiculous. You can't even grow a pecan in the state of Florida. They don't even grow here, and Key limes are everywhere and the citrus industry supports us," resident Connie Gallaway said."We're known for our lime, our citrus. We are the citrus state. We should have a citrus Key lime pie," said Lisa Roth, of Newriver Grove. "Georgia, they need to keep their pie over in Georgia."Newriver Grove in Davie puts out 30,000 Key lime pies per year, and their pie boxes already claim Key lime pies as the winner of the debate.Roth says to put a fork in it -- it's a done deal."I think it's ridiculous. Our customers come in, they think it's ridiculous. They think that Key lime should be the official state pie," Roth said.Hundreds signed one South Florida petition to make Key lime pie the official state pie. In 1994, the state officially recognized Key lime pie as an important symbol of Florida.Those in the northern part of the state hope their pecans will prevail and that lawmakers will agree to make pecan pie the state pie."Key lime pie, it tastes better than pecan pie. That's why," Key lime pie lover Anthony McCroy said.No decision has been made yet.
