Police Search For Handcuffed Woman Who Escaped From Squad Car

UPDATED: 12:05 am EST December 17, 2005

Police were searching Friday evening for a handcuffed woman they say escaped from police custody in Miami Beach.

Police said the woman was handcuffed in the back of a squad car near the intersection of 41st Street and Pine Tree Drive when she somehow escaped from police.

The woman ran toward a nearby Walgreens, then took off running into an upscale Miami Beach neighborhood of multimillion-dollar homes with big yards and plenty of places to hide.

The search began at about 9 p.m. and police still had not found the woman by 11 p.m. Ten police units and a helicopter searched the area and officers went door-to-door.

It is uncertain whether the woman's handcuffs were steel or plastic, NBC 6's Tom Llamas reported. Police said she was wanted on drug charges.
