Broward County Sheriff officials say two adults and a child were killed when their vehicle was struck by a Tri-Rail train in Pompano Beach on Sunday night.

The accident occurred on the CSX track in the 1400 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard, just north of Atlantic Boulevard.

A BSO spokesman says 28-year-old Albert Renteria, 24-year-old Martiza Gomez and her 2-year-old son Daniel Renteria were killed instantly.

Deputies say the crash occurred when Renteria and another driver became impatient and tried to go around a gate. The first driver made it but Renteria didn't.

Investigators say warning lights were flashing when the crash occurred and the gate was down.

Witnesses reported that the gate was down for about 20 minutes, but sheriff deputies were still investigating how long.

The train stopped at Atlantic Boulevard, closing the road several blocks east and west of the railroad crossing.

"It's just never a good idea to go around a rail road track," Jim Leljedal said. 'People in the car are going to be either critically injured or killed."
