City Manager Walks Out Of Meeting About Neighborhood Complaints

Group Says Manager Was Given Allotted Time To Speak

The Miami City Manager abruptly walked out of a Miami community meeting Monday after he found how much time he would be given to address dozens of complaints from residents.

Residents plan to take their demands and complaints about trash, crime and drainage in neighborhoods like Wynwood and Allapattah to the City of Miami Commission after City Manager Joe Arriola walked out of the meeting.

"(If) you are not going to let me talk to my people, I do not want to be here," Arriola said.

People Acting for Community Together, or PACT, demanded that their streets be cleaned up like other neighborhoods.

"PACT never gives up, and what we are asking is fairness," said Willy Bolivar, of PACT.

Comparing high-end areas of the city, like Brickell Avenue, to parts of Little Haiti and Overtown illustrated the group's concerns. Residents cited broken street lights, trash and dead animals piling up in neighborhoods and overgrown lots where residents complained crime grows like weeds.

For more than 40 minutes, a litany of ills were paraded before Arriola, who then lashed out when informed he had only three minutes to speak.

"And, if you are going to be given three minutes after listening to all you have to say, I'd better leave now," Arriola said.

"We had given him an allotted time to speak, and he was not in agreement with that," said Belkis Zarate, of PACT.

Arriola, who brought 25 city employees to the meeting, including mostly Miami police, explained his hasty departure.

"Apparently, the leaders of this PACT don't want the answers. They were not looking for answers," Arriola said.

Comparing their communities to other parts of the city where millions are poured into the infrastructure, PACT members plan to follow up their meeting with Arriola with a direct visit to City Hall.
