11 Deaths In Florida Now Attributed To Hurricane Katrina

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- The state of Florida is now attributing 11 deaths to Hurricane Katrina.Before heading into the Gulf, Katrina had hit South Florida Thursday as a Category 1 storm with 80 mph winds.In Broward County, two people were discovered dead in their Davie home of apparent carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator.
A man died after a tree fell on his car while it was parked near Stranahan High School in Fort Lauderdale.A 54-year-old man was killed outside his house by a falling tree in the Fort Lauderdale suburb of Plantation. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Broward County authorities.A woman who was struck by a tree died at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.A 79-year-old man and his dog were killed when his car struck a fallen tree in Cooper City.In Miami-Dade County, a man died from injuries suffered when the storm buffeted his boat, which drifted to Grove Island Key in Miami.Another man died at Dinner Key when his boat capsized.And a Florida City man died when he was struck by a falling tree.Some areas, including Homestead, Cutler Ridge and Naranja, were flooded, but it's unclear how many homes were damaged. Initial computer modeling estimates peg the insured wind damage at $600 million to $2 billion.Schools have reopened in Broward County and the Florida Keys today, but remain closed in Miami-Dade County. About 188,400 customers in South Florida are still without power.Floodwaters have receded and the roads are open in Homestead, which had to be rebuilt after being virtually destroyed in 1993's Hurricane Andrew.Homestead Police Department spokesman Ed Bowe says the Red Cross is doing assessments to flood-damaged homes.
