CANTON, Texas -- The parent suspected of shooting Canton High School coach and athletic director Gary Kinne is in custody.
Jeffrey Robertson is being treated for self-inflicted wounds. Authorities believe Robertson slashed his wrists before he was caught near Lindale, Texas, after an intense manhunt Thursday afternoon. The Department of Public Safety said Robertson was caught close to where his truck was abandoned near Lindale.Kinne, who is also the Canton High School athletic director, was shot at least once at about 9:20 a.m. and airlifted to a hospital in nearby Tyler, Don Martin, spokesman for the Tyler Police Department told The Tyler Morning Telegraph. The Governor's Office of Homeland Security accused Robertson of firing an AK-47 and then fleeing the scene in a 2004 black Dodge pickup.Kinne was shot at the school's athletic field house in Canton, authorities said.Information on Kinne's condition was being withheld at the request of Canton police, said John Moore, spokesman for Trinity Mother Frances Health System in Tyler. Kinne was once a linebacker at Baylor University. He took over in Canton after leaving Mesquite High School in 2003.Some students at Canton High School said Robertson's son, Baron, earlier this week was kicked out of all of the Canton school's athletics programs.Canton police said Jeffrey Robertson had also been banned from campus and told not to attend school functions after several confrontations with coaches. He was believed to have other weapons in the truck and had made statements that he had a hit list and would not be taken alive, said Sophie Yanez, a spokeswoman for the state homeland security office. A state investigator said authorities had reports that Robertson and the coach had an "altercation." CNN reported that the suspect and the coach had disputes about playing time for Robertson's son.The superintendent of the Canton Independent School District said that all campuses in the district had been on lockdown. Amanda Sheperd, owner of Backwoods Bar-B-Que in Canton, said she was alarmed when she heard about the shooting because her ninth-grade grandson, Ty Sheperd, plays baseball and has a class in the field house. She believes he had left the field house and gone to band class before the shooting. "I talked to the school just now and they said the kids were taken care of, and they're not letting anybody in or out," said Sheperd, who was continuing to serve lunch to customers as news helicopters hovered over the school about a half-mile away.
