POSTED: 9:37 am EST March 15, 2005

He survived two days in a concrete hole after falling off a bridge. Now, David Estigarribia is out of the hospital and talking about how he got through it all.

Less than two weeks ago, Estigarribia fell 40 feet off a bridge in Miami.

He was released from Jackson Memorial Hospital Monday and his doctors said if it was not for his mental strength and ingenuity he may not have survived at all.

"I don't know how I did it," Estigarribia said. "All I know is that during those days I was down there I refused to die. I refused to give up."

Estigarribia said he tried to escape twice by going up an old ladder, but he was so weak and badly injured that he couldn't do it. He said he fell 20 feet back to the ground each time.

Estigarribia had a smashed ankle, broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

"The trauma was so severe that the skin actually tore on the inside portion of his ankle, exposing the bone to the air," Dr. Raymond Topp said.

In and out of consciousness, Estigarribia said he survived by drinking filthy drain water and pigeon blood.

"I hadn't said this before because I didn't know how graphic it would be, but I actually wound up drinking the blood of a pigeon that I had killed on one of the ledges," he said. "There was nest there and I didn't have any liquid in me and I was just so thirsty that I needed drink something."

Estigarribia was rescued after a port worker walking by the concrete hole heard his cries for help.

Monday, Estigarribia thanked his rescuers for putting in so much time and work saving him.
