Rabbits Terrorize Vehicles In Denver Airport Lots

Animals Chew Through Wires In Cars

POSTED: 2:02 pm EST January 20, 2005

In recent weeks, many car owners in Denver, Colo., have had their cars damaged, and the culprit is an unlikely source.

Paw prints in the snow are only a hint. On any given afternoon, several rabbits can be seen scampering around Denver International Airport parking lots.

"When I first called the Audi people, they said, 'Have you been out at DIA?'" said Eric Underwood.

Underwood parked his Audi in the economy lot. When he came back from his honeymoon, there was a warning light on the dash. Rabbits or rodents had chewed through his oil sensor wires.

"I know when I was getting my car repaired there was two other people at the dealer getting the same problem repaired," Underwood said.

Mechanic Casey Warne has seen the signs that point to a rabbit as the culprit.

"It's ragged," Warne said of Underwood's car wire. "You can tell they've been chewing there. Sometimes there may be hair that's on the belly pan from the rodents or the rabbit."

And sometimes there's more than hair. McDonald Audi service technicians caught a digital picture of a rabbit, towed alive inside a car from DIA.

"There were certain points over the summer when we were getting one to two cars a day," Warne said.

Even the service managers can't escape the damage.

"I've had it happen to my own vehicle, yes," Warne said.

McDonald Audi has remedied the problem by replacing plastic coating with braided metal wiring.

"It's made out of steel. They really don't like to chew through this stuff," Warne said.

It's an easy, but expensive fix, sometimes costing $200. But Underwood said it's a necessary expense in the land of rabbits and cars.

"I'm flying out next week and I'll probably have my wife drive me out to DIA and drop me off and pick me up," Underwood said. "I don't want to pay for another repair."
