MIAMI -- Movie star Ben Affleck, in his visit to South Florida, criticized Sen. John McCain’s celebrity advertisement against Sen. Barack Obama.Affleck, who attended a $250-a-ticket event in South Beach Saturday supporting Obama with wife Jennifer Garner, spoke exclusively with NBC 6. Affleck criticized McCain for a tactical ad with misleading images of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.
“It’s about the images that you select and trying to be … you know … kind of pernicious and sneaky as possible,” Affleck said.Affleck said he supports the Democrats because of their support for a responsible withdrawal from Iraq, educational issues and universal healthcare.“The chief among them is the general idea of whether or not you’d like the country to continue on in the way that it’s going or to change,” Affleck said.Matt Damon, who was also at the event, and Garner took similar positions, saying eight more years of Republican leadership is the wrong idea. The Oscar-winning actor’s last political appearance in Florida was in 2000 when he supported Al Gore.He said McCain’s ads against Obama are weak.“You know you’re in tough shape if the one thing you have to criticize your opponent over is how much he’s inspiring to voters,” Affleck said.Affleck said voters will decide for themselves who to vote for and will not necessarily follow what celebrities say.
