Researchers: Some Foods Can Relieve Arthritis Pain

Millions of Americans suffer from arthritis. Now researchers show that ingredients in your daily diet offer relief from the pain.

“One of the reasons why people feel the pain associated with arthritis is because of the inflammatory response,” said dietician Lisa Dorfman.

Dorfman said one solution for this pain could be what you cook in your kitchen.

“We could maybe avoid some of the need for some pain relief medication,” Dorfman said. “There are compounds in some foods that actually help to block the enzymes that bring on the inflammatory response.”

Dorfman wrote about her response to arthritis in a health book. She had recipes such as fat-free brownies baked with yogurt, spinach and dried cherries.

Dorfman uses cherries in a lot of food and beverages, and with good reason.

“There is a compound in tart cherries called Anthocyanine. There was some research done at the University of Michigan that showed that even a small dose, like a cup of tart cherries every day, could reduce the inflammation markers, Dorfman said. “The signs that there is inflammation going on in the system.”

Spinach and green tea serve the same purpose as tart cherries. Ground flax is also beneficial as it provides essential Omega-3 oils often deficient in our diets.

“More than 90 percent of the people that I see in my practice do not get enough Omega-3,” Dorfman said.

Dorfman also utilizes soy and foods that have been fortified with Omega-3. She strongly believes that all these foods and ingredients can make a difference.

“I have seen it firsthand. Absolutely, people feel better,” Dorfman said.

A compound used in broccoli is also good for arthritic joints, according to researchers from John Hopkins University. The compound, found within broccoli, fights the Cox-2 enzyme, which is the target of several prescription drugs.
