MIAMI -- After a multimillion-dollar, three-year project, LeJeune Road reopened on Friday.LeJeune Road used to be one of the most dreaded roadways in Miami. On Friday, a new highway was opened to help ensure a smooth ride for motorists. For almost two decades, people have struggled to use LeJeune Road to get into and out of the Miami International Airport.
The road's ribbon was cut on Friday, and traffic began to flow down the new highway between the Dolphin Expressway and the Airport Expressway."We all remember how congested LeJeune was, and really what this project represents is a separation of traffic," said Gary Don of the Florida Department of Transportation. "Those that now are going directly to the airport have their own separate road and through traffic, north-south, gets through the airport without any type of congestion."The new highway is part of the FDOT's $194 million roadway system. Improvements included new roads, bridges and interchanges streamlining traffic flow around the airport."It was all about connecting modes of transportation, which we are going to be doing at our Miami Intermodal Center, which is going to be our grand central station here in Miami," Don said.Another part of the plan is to house all of the major car rental companies in one facility to the east of LeJeune. The land, alone, that was brought up to expand the LeJeune corridor cost $100 million.
