Broward Woman Dies In Plastic Surgery Gone Awry

Patient Dies After Fighting Coma

UPDATED: 6:19 p.m. EDT August 7, 2002

A Broward County woman is dead, the apparent victim of a cosmetic surgery gone wrong. Now the doctor who performed that surgery is under investigation, and two more of his former patients are coming forward to say he allegedly botched their operations too.

Cosmetic Surgery Death Dr. Alton Ingram Jr., 38, of Pompano Beach, is facing intense public scrutiny in the wake of the unsuccessful cosmetic surgery he performed on Olga Myers, 42. Myers remained on life support in Broward General Medical Center, until her death Wednesday.

Cosmetic Surgery DeathA realtor and mother of two, Myers was rushed to the hospital last week when a face-lift and eye job at the Cosmetic Surgery Center, located at 3109 Stirling Road, Suite 100, went awry.

Now two other women have come forward, saying they too were left disfigured by Ingram.

Donna Korth, 55, a Naples hairdresser, and Anita Marke, a Staten Island, N.Y., homemaker, say Ingram botched their cosmetic procedures, too.

Korth said she landed in the hospital two years ago after Ingram punctured her intestines during liposuction. Korth said she was left twisted in pain and had to undergo corrective surgery and two blood transfusions because of Ingram's alleged medical incompetence.

Marke, who owns a home in Boca Raton, said she went to Ingram two years ago for a cosmetic medical procedure she does not wish to have disclosed. She said Ingram so horribly botched the procedure that she had to undergo subsequent skin grafts.

Marke said she is still suffering the pain and embarrassment of Ingram's work.

Both women considered suing Ingram for medical malpractice, but were told it would be futile because he had filed for bankruptcy protection.

Ingram decided not to carry medical malpractice insurance, as is his right under Florida law, but under the statute agreed to satisfy any adverse judgments against him up to $250,000.

However, before Marke and Korth could file a medical malpractice suit against him, Ingram filed for bankruptcy.

Meanwhile, Marke said she was led to believe that Ingram was no longer practicing medicine following his bankruptcy filing.

"He's a horrible person," she told The Miami Herald from her home in New York. "It's wrong. I want his license revoked." She said she was horrified upon learning of Myers' condition. "That kills me," she said. "That could have been me."

According to Broward General Medical Center, Myers died Wednesday, but the hospital hasn't commented on the death. Ingram could not be reached for comment Monday.

The Florida Board of Medicine is investigating the Myers case.

Ingram's own report on the case suggested that illegal drugs taken by the patient might have been partly responsible for her death.

Ingram wrote that toxicology done on the woman at the hospital showed benzodiazepines, anti-anxiety pills he gave at the start of the procedure, as well as cocaine, marijuana and amphetamines in the woman's system.

"An interaction of licit and illicit drugs is possible," Ingram wrote, concluding the report by writing: "I am in the process of reviewing our policy with regard to preoperative toxicological testing as well as our emergency protocols. After this review, I plan to discuss the above in a formal setting with all of the staff."

Cosmetic surgery in medical offices has come under increased scrutiny from medical regulators in Florida recently, amid reports of dozens of patient deaths and serious injuries. The state is one of the nation's top markets for the operations.
