KENDALL, Fla. -- One South Florida pastor was in high spirits on Monday after a taking the journey of a lifetime. The Rev. Eric Olsen, who is battling terminal cancer, was able to fulfill his life's wish of going to see the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Ga.Doctors recently gave Olsen only a few months to live.
When NBC 6's Ari Odzer asked him how his trip went, Olsen replied, "Great, but there's no place like home."Olsen and his sons spent the weekend at the Masters – a real adventure for the family man who may have just months to live."The aura of the Masters gripped me," Olsen said. "Having my two sons with me was just as important."Olsen's trip was made possible by the Dream Foundation. Total strangers gave up their tickets and provided a place for Olsen to stay.Video from the tournament showed Olsen in a wheelchair at his favorite part of the course: Amen Corner.Olsen's sons said being at the tournament was bittersweet, but it was a dream come true for their father.Olsen has been a pastor at Sunset Chapel for five years. He said his illness makes it harder and harder for him to work, but having terminal cancer also gives tremendous weight to the profound message he's preaching."You know, there's people who aren't in churches today because someone they loved died of cancer or an accident and they walked away from God bitter," Olsen said. "The grace of God isn't always to get you out of a situation, but to empower you to get through a situation, as well."He said he doesn't have time to wonder if a colonoscopy six months earlier might have made a difference in his life. He said he's trying to maximize the time he has left. The trip to Augusta National was great, he said, but spending time with his family was even better."I've got no regrets," he said. "I've got three great kids. My wife and I have been best friends for 33 years. Some people live their whole lives and never live. We've lived. This was icing on the cake."
