Family and friends are mourning a teenage girl who died this weekend after undergoing breast surgery.

Mourners gathered at a Boca Raton funeral home on Tuesday to pay respects to 18-year-old Stephanie Kuleba.

Kuleba died on Saturday morning after undergoing corrective breast surgery for a birth defect.

"We believe based upon the comments from hospital personnel that her death most likely was caused by a genetic disorder," said Roberto Stanziale, her family's attorney. "When a person [with the disorder] is administered a certain class, a certain type of anesthesia, it causes really very serious complications in the body."

Stanziale said that while something went terribly wrong in the operating room, at this point the family is not pointing fingers.

"They're looking to see what happened. They're not saying anybody's at fault," Stanziale said.

Kuleba's loss is a sad reality for her classmates, who placed flowers on her parking space at school. Nearby, mourners have created a memorial along a fence, where friends and strangers have placed flowers, cards and notes.

"It's really hard at school because everyone really loved Steph," said her friend, Brooke Golob. "We would sometimes walk to third hour together, so I had third hour today and she wasn't there."

Friends described Kuleba as an attractive, athletic, intelligent girl who was on her way to the top. She was recently accepted to the University of Florida, where she hoped to study to become a doctor.

After Kuleba's sudden loss, her family is left asking why it happened.

"Shocked, just shocked," said Sherrie Starr, a family friend. "No mother should go through this."

Kuleba's family members were not speaking to the media on Tuesday.

Stanziale said the two doctors involved in the surgery both have clean records. The attorney admitted that after the investigation is complete, it could turn out to be an accident.
