MARATHON, Fla. -- Authorities have released the tapes of the 911 calls from the day a woman was killed in a collision with a spotted eagle ray in the Florida Keys.Judy Kay Zagorski, 57, of Pigeon, Mich., was vacationing in Marathon with her family. On Thursday, she was in the front of a boat when a 75-pound spotted eagle ray leapt from the water and hit her in a collision. She later was pronounced dead.
The Monroe County medical examiner, Dr. Michael Hunter, said the cause of death was "blunt force" head trauma, and that the collision with the ray killed her.The 911 calls from the incident were released on Friday."A lady just got hurt by a sting ray and she's bleeding pretty bad," the caller told the 911 dispatcher. On Friday, Zagorski's brother, Dan Bouck, spoke about his sister in a news conference. "We all miss Judy dearly. It just really hasn't even sunk in yet," he said.Bouck talked about the life his sister led. "Judy managed a campground and marina in Michigan, which fit her well because she loved the out of doors," he said.Zagorski also volunteered at a hospice. Two years ago, she lost the love of her life, her husband, Steve."The events that led to Judy's death (Thursday) were the result of an unavoidable accident. It couldn't have been prevented and won't likely be replicated," Bouck said.Despite the worldwide interest in her story, Zagorski's family said they want privacy so they can grieve alone, NBC 6's Hank Tester reported.
