MIAMI -- A family is alive thanks to the quick thinking of a young mother when an early-morning fire broke out in their home.Authorities said the fire erupted at the home on Northwest 158th Street near North Miami Avenue at about 3:30 a.m. Friday. At the time of the fire, the young mother, her 2-month-old baby and three other people were inside the home.
The mother said she awoke to hear crackling and popping and then saw the smoke and flames. She grabbed her baby, woke up the others and everyone escaped the house, NBC 6's Steve Litz reported.Eva Thomas, who also lives at the house, was at her overnight job when the fire struck. She came home Friday morning to find her house ruined and her family's faces covered in soot."We lost everything inside. There's nothing, nothing, nothing," she said. "Everything is gone."Investigators said the fire broke out on the back porch and spread from there. The flames even reached the attic, forcing firefighters to poke holes in the ceiling to fight them.Although their home is ruined, no one in the family was injured. The family dog also escaped unharmed."I am very glad and I thank God that those five children are OK," Thomas said. The mother said a Jacuzzi in the back yard was turned on for the first time Thursday. Officials continue their investigation and have not determined an official cause of the fire.
