MIAMI -- The Miami-Dade school district's top cop is in the hot seat following last week's protests and controversial arrests at Miami Edison High School. On Saturday, 47 Miami-Dade school police union members voted in favor of holding a meeting to cast a vote of “no confidence” against Chief Gerald Darling. The vote came after dozens of students were arrested last Friday in a scene which some parents and students argued police used excessive force.
Schools superintendent Rudy Crew released a statement defending Darling. “Chief Darling’s leadership has brought positive change for Miami-Dade County public schools students,” the statement said. "Under his direction, violent crime throughout the district has been reduced by 47 percent and student arrests have been reduced by 43 percent.”
