NORTH MIAMI, Fla. -- After being robbed six times, a North Miami resident took matters into her own hands, sending a message to robbers and police.
Teresa Schmitz put up a banner on the front of her house proclaiming North Miami police were not doing enough to keep her home safe.
The banner reads, "We have been robbed six times. Come back again at your own risk. Thank you city of North Miami police for nothing.""Unfortunately people are able to literally walk over our fence and carry bags of our stuff down the street, down 125th Street, a very busy street, and get away with it," Schmitz said. "So what kind of surveillance is going on?"The home has been robbed, according to the owner, six times since 2000. She said it has been robbed about once a year. She has an alarm system and installed new locks on Thursday.Schmitz's house is on 125th Street, which is an easy exit for robbers.Neighbors said their homes had not been robbed, but they knew about Schmitz's problems.Miami-Dade County's Robbery Intervention detail has targeted the area. A teenager was recently shot by a Miami-Dade County police officer nearby."I'm done," Schmitz said. "I'm tired of it. I shouldn't be forced to live with bars on my window."North Miami police said they were aware of Schmitz's situation."We're very well aware of the burglary at her residence," said Lt. Neil Cuevas of North Miami police. "We have contacted her and other residents in the area, and we're on top of it."North Miami's police chief was fired recently. The mayor of North Miami said he was not happy with the city's rise in crime rate.
