The teen's family members said he and his 15-year-old brother were carrying laundry to a Laundromat near their home when an altercation broke out between them and the officer in an alleyway.

Initial reports were that police responded to a shooting in an alley in the area of 728 Northeast 128th Street at about 8:30 p.m.

Authorities cordoned off the area of Northeast 128th Street and West Dixie Highway.

Family members of the man who was shot were overcome with grief after learning that their loved one had been killed.

The Miami-Dade County police officer who shot the victim was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities did not disclose the nature of his injuries and his name has not been released. They did say that the officer is part of the county's robbery intervention unit.

Authorities did not release the name of the victim.

Police declined further comment because their investigation is in its early stages.
