OAKLAND PARK, Fla. -- Two people were injured and a dog killed when two pit bulls attacked in Oakland Park.
It was supposed to be a normal walk around the block on Monday morning for Susanne Tenney and her greyhound Zydaco.
"All of a sudden, these two pit bulls just came running down the street like a streak of lightning," Tenney said.Seconds later, there was a vicious attack."These two pit bulls, one went to the head, the other went to the rear -- just attacking her from both ends," Tenney said. She said she jumped on Zydaco when the first one came, trying to protect her, but then the second pit bull began to attack.Tenney said the attack happened so fast that she didn't even have time to pull out her Mace."I was screaming my head off, and people came trying to help," she said. One man heard Tenney's cries for help and tried to pull the pit bulls away."I couldn't understand," he said. "When I would pull them off the dog, they would come back."As a result, the man was bitten more than five times on his leg and arm, causing him to need 26 stitches."It was probably the most frightening thing in my life," he said. "But I did it, and I'm glad I did it."The injuries were too severe for 7-year-old Zydaco. She had to be put to sleep. The owners of the pit bulls refused to comment. The owner was identified as Jose Giannelli. Police said he has been cited five times with a total of $5,000 in fines. One of the citations was for no proof of license for the dogs.Authorities said both pit bulls will be in quarantine for a few days and will be euthanized within 10 days.Miami-Dade Animal Services said it is illegal to own a pit bull in Miami-Dade County, but not in Broward County where the attack occurred.
