Two men met for the first time on Wednesday since one saved the other from drowning off the coast of Key Largo.

It began with a fishing trip near the Ocean Reef Club off the coast of Key Largo on Saturday.

Jeffrey Bass and boat captain James Koch were on one boat, and 62-year-old Norberto Martinez and his friend were on another.

Martinez's boat crashed and circled around the two men who had been on board. His friend had a life jacket, but Martinez received severe cuts from the boat's propeller and was barely hanging on to life.

Bass, seeing the accident, went into the water to rescue Martinez.

At the pair's first meeting since the accident, Bass recounted to Martinez what he saw that day.

"Your eyes were wide open," he said. "Your lips were black. We were trying to hold you and bring you back. Thank God we did."

Bass said Martinez was under the water and he was confident that Martinez was dead.

"I laid out on the front of the boat," Bass said. "He edged it up. We grabbed you from the back from your belt buckle, and then I told Capt. Koch to reverse."

He said they struggled to pull Martinez out.

"The water just kept pouring out of your head," Bass said. "And then, lo and behold, you threw up all over me and I was never so happy."

With the help of rescue teams and doctors at the Jackson Memorial Hospital, Martinez will be back home soon.

"It's very rare that one person saves the life of another person," one doctor said. "It is extremely rare."

Martinez's daughter, Liana, said she couldn't be happier.

With a baby on the way, she said she is grateful that Martinez will be around to see his new grandchild.

"He has God and them to thank for giving him his second life," Liana Martinez said.

Doctors said Martinez will be out of the hospital by Thursday.
