GOULDS, Fla. -- A group of 18 Cubans are in the custody of border protection agents after they were dropped off at a gas station in Goulds.
People in the group told NBC 6 that they made it to U.S. soil in the Florida Keys on Thursday night and then were driven to the Freedom Oil Station on South Dixie Highway.
The group includes 15 adults and three young children. One man spoke English and he said he used to be a professor in Cuba."I feel OK. I feel good," he said. "I'm suffering because of my family. I left my family there -- my wife, my little child and a daughter. But I think I'm going to get a chance here in this country because I'm prepared for the life."Officials said they believe the group was smuggled into the U.S. They will likely be released to family members because the wet-foot, dry-foot policy allows Cubans who reach dry land to stay in the United States.
