Miami-Dade police said Shawn Sherwin Labeet, wanted in connection with the shootings of four officers, was shot dead in Pembroke Pines just before midnight Thursday.

After an intensive manhunt that included officers from several municipalities, police found Labeet at the Heron Pond apartment complex at 305 Southwest 85th Avenue in Pembroke Pines.

Police said he was confronted, there was an exchange of fire and Labeet was shot and killed.

Officer Jose Somohano was killed in the shootings, which happened before 11 a.m. Thursday in southwest Miami-Dade near an apartment complex on Southwest 143rd Court.

Somohano had been with the department since 2003. He was 37 years old and had a wife and two children.

Police say that two of the officers, Tomas Tundidor and Christopher Carlin, were released from the hospital, one from Baptist Hospital and one from Homestead Hospital.

The third police officer, 31-year-old Jody Wright, remains at Jackson-Memorial Hospital where doctors performed surgery on her on Thursday afternoon. She suffered a leg injury.

All of the officers worked out of the Cutler Ridge district and were part of a crime suppression unit.

MDPD issued a $22,000 reward Thursday night for anyone with information leading Labeet's arrest.

The FDLE offered $10,000, the Bring to Justice Reward Fund offered $10,000, Crime Stoppers offered $1,000 and the Miami-Dade County GUN-BOUNTY program offered $1,000.

Police originally identified Kevin Wehner as the suspect, but Cmdr. Linda O'Brien said Labeet had apparently stolen Wehner's identity. Wehner notified Jacksonville police when he saw his picture on television. O'Brien said Wehner has nothing to do with the shootings.

Police said Labeet's girlfriend gave them incorrect information. She was apprehended at the scene and questioned.

"It appears that we were being misled ... by somebody we were talking to who said they were giving us correct information," O'Brien told reporters.

O'Brien said that Labeet had an arrest warrant in Broward County. He was wanted for aggravated battery.

Police also said that Labeet was last seen inside a four-door 2007 black Pontiac Vibe with license plate No. W59-EPT. The car was located at a mall near Oakland Park Road and Federal Highway.

Police found a man in the car with two children and a woman, but said the man was not Labeet. The man "turned out to be another family member," said Mary Walters, another police spokeswoman.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez said at a press conference Thursday night that it's by the grace of God that other lives were not loss.

"We will be working around the clock, however long, what with a cop killer at large," Alvarez said. "It's a horrible feeling and tragedy for the entire community."

Massive Search Under Way

O'Brien said the officers saw a white Honda Accord driving erratically and attempted to stop the driver.

O'Brien said the driver, identified as 25-year-old Labeet, came out of the vehicle firing a high-powered weapon.

"Anybody that knows him, has seen him, call Crime Stoppers, call 911. Do not go near him. He's considered armed and very dangerous," O'Brien said.

Police later located the Accord and recovered a high-powered rifle inside the vehicle. O'Brien said tests are being conducted to determine if the rifle was used in the shootings.

Authorities said it was incomprehensible that four of their colleagues had been targeted.

"You say that it is not true," said Robert Parker, director of the Miami-Dade Police Department. "You doubt it for a second or two."

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez said numerous agencies assisted in the search for the suspect.

"We need the community's assistance in trying to locate this extremely dangerous individual who's still on the loose," he said in a Thursday night news conference.

Search Stalls Traffic Across S. Fla.

Commuters across South Florida felt the effects of the massive manhunt on Thursday afternoon.

"From Boca to here (Miami), two hours," commuter Tal Avarhami said. "It normally takes 45 minutes."

Many major highways, including the Florida Turnpike, Dolphin Expressway and Interstate 95, were impacted because of extra police presence.

The search for Labeet also affected Miami International Airport, where officials were conducting random inspections.

One officer told NBC 6 that police spotted a man with a ticket to Spain who "could've been the suspect's twin." The man's identification proved otherwise.

Officers were also going onto airport buses searching for Labeet.

"I don't care if they take two hours or longer as long as they find the guy," Avarhami said.

Miami Mayor Shares Condolences

Miami Mayor Manny Diaz released the following statement: "On behalf of the City of Miami, I would like to offer my deepest condolences to Mayor Carlos Alvarez and the Miami-Dade Police Department, for the terrible loss that they have suffered as a result of today's tragic events.

"The loss of this brave police officer, sworn to serve and protect our neighborhoods, is a tragedy that will be felt across all of law enforcement and the South Florida community. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

"Today's events are a tragic testament to the bravery of our law enforcement officers every time they report for duty. Our safety is owed to the daily sacrifices made by these truly heroic men and women.

"I would like to assure Mayor Alvarez that all available resources of the City of Miami are at his disposal. We stand ready to assist in every way possible."

Blood Drive Held For Wounded Officers

The South Miami Police Department is holding a blood drive Friday for the wounded officers.
