HIALEAH, Fla. -- Hialeah police said they broke up a car insurance fraud scam Wednesday.

Police said their main suspects are Guillermo Cuellar, 21, and Yassel Garcia, 23.The men allegedly stole the cars for $500 each.Undercover police went to the men to buy back the cars. Police said when they attempted to sell the cars to police, they were arrested. The people who sold the cars to Cuellar and Garcia were also charged with insurance fraud and for filing a false criminal report."Here comes in an individual like Mr. Cuellar would offer his services to these people and say, 'I'll make your car disappear for a price,'" Hialeah police Detective Carl Zogby said."I would say that almost 60 percent of all stolen vehicles in the U.S. have some sort of insurance fraud involved with it, which causes our insurance rates to go up," Tony Fernandez of the National Insurance Crime Bureau said.Hialeah police said seven out of eight people allegedly involved in the crimes have confessed. If convicted, they could face serious prison time.
