MIAMI -- Miami has been named the road-rage capital of the U.S.Police said road rage was to blame for a crash on State Road 112 Wednesday morning that caused a major traffic jam and left a woman hospitalized.
Police said the crash happened after two motorists apparently got into a fender-bender in the eastbound lane of Eighth Street and Southwest Third Avenue. One of the drivers then began chasing the other on State Road 112 and I-95, police said. The two eventually pulled onto the median and that's when, police said, one driver jumped out and punctured the tires of the other car with a screwdriver."What changed everything was the offending vehicle decided to just drive away," Martha Carbana of the Miami Police Department said. "The victim then decided to follow the person."One of the cars sped away, hitting a black Toyota and forcing it into the path of a box truck. The truck crashed into the rear of the Toyota, crushing the car and trapping the driver inside.Miami Fire Rescue workers had to cut the roof off the Toyota to get the driver out. She was taken to Ryder Trauma Center in fair condition.Police are still looking for the alleged road rage driver who escaped on foot. Police did not have a description of the cars that caused the crash.Anyone with information should call CrimeStoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
