MIAMI -- Nine vehicles stolen from the U.S. and found in Honduras were unloaded at the Port of Miami Monday morning.
Chopper 6 was over the Port of Miami while customs and insurance officials processed the stolen vehicles.
Authorities said most of the vehicles were not high-priced, but rather work trucks. However, Customs and Border Protection Officer Angel Marquez said the trucks are valuable in Central and South American cities."A truck in Honduras probably goes for about $30,000 or $40,000," Marquez said. "These trucks probably go for about $20,000 or $15,000 over there."All of the vehicles were stolen from the U.S. over the past few years. One BMW sports utility vehicle was stolen from Hialeah in 2004.Authorities said about 90,000 stolen vehicles are recovered from Central and South America every year."Somebody makes an operation for the bad people," Agent Tony Fernandez of the National Insurance Crime Bureau said. "It makes it real easy to steal a car down here and ship it out to South America at no cost, very little cost."Fernandez said authorities are making progress in recovering stolen vehicles, which will hopefully deter people from stealing them."Once the insurance company suffers a loss, that's going to go down to the consumer," he said. "That's what we're trying to avoid. Rates are going up, especially imports. This is one of the ways that we try to prevent our rates from going up."Investigators said cooperation with investigators in Central and South America is key to recovering stolen vehicles. The insurance company owns the vehicles until they are auctioned off for sale.
