MIAMI -- A 14-year-old boy was rushed to Miami Children's Hospital in critical condition on Monday after being shot in the stomach while playing with a gun belonging to a relative, authorities said.
It happened on the 12000 block of Northwest Seventh Street in northwest Miami-Dade County.
According to police, 14-year-old Alexander Jacob Fallejo and a friend were playing with a handgun when the .38-caliber weapon accidentally went off, hitting Fallejo in the stomach.Fallejo was rushed to the hospital while police questioned his friend. From Chopper 6 over the scene, Fallejo's mother could be seen sitting on the ground with her head buried in her hands.Crime scene investigators photographed the house where the incident took place and searched a car where the victim was temporarily placed while waiting for paramedics to arrive.Detectives questioned family members, but police would not confirm who fired the weapon. According to Del Castillo, the gun was in the house but the family had forgotten about it. Family members said they weren't even sure where the gun was kept."It's a little disturbing because I have kids myself. Other than that, I don't think the neighborhood has anything to do with it," said neighbor Dulce Cabrera. In 2006, 26 children lost their lives to gun violence. As a result, the Miami-Dade County state attorney's office is giving out gun locks for free. To get one, call 305-547-0724.
