FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The family of a woman who was found dead in the trunk of a car now faces another hardship involving the woman's improper burial.
Cassandra Williams' gravesite and casket were flooded with water in Sunrise Memorial Gardens.
"They didn't put the cover on the concrete vault, which allowed water to seep into Cassandra Williams' casket," Allan Anchell, the family's attorney, said. "It required them to pull the body out of the casket."Anchell filed a lawsuit Monday against CFS Funeral Services, the company that operates the cemetery owned by the city of Fort Lauderdale.Last month, the bodies of Williams and another victim, Chris Thompson, were found dead and stuffed in a trunk in Sunrise, Fla.A few days after the burial, Williams' father went to visit his daughter's grave."He observed the casket protruding out of the wooden plates, floating in the deep water," Anchell said. The Williams family said it was unacceptable and was the reason for the lawsuit.Williams' body now resides in a mausoleum in Sunrise Memorial Gardens."The purpose of this lawsuit is to teach the cemetery operator a lesson to make sure that this never happens again," Anchell said. The city of Fort Lauderdale was not involved in the lawsuit. There are four city-owned funeral homes in Fort Lauderdale and CFS Funeral Services operates all of them.A city official in Fort Lauderdale said the city had not received complaints about any of the other funeral homes in the area.CFS Funeral Services, a company based in Texas, did not return phone calls.
