MIAMI -- Using a stolen backhoe as their tool of choice, police said two men tried to steal an ATM machine early Tuesday morning but left with no money.
Police said the men stole the backhoe from a nearby construction site and tried to steal the entire ATM machine from a Bank Atlantic branch at Southwest Eighth Street and 146th Avenue.
Investigators said the two robbers rammed the drive-up ATM machine repeatedly until a shopping center security guard confronted them."The backhoe -- upon entering into the shopping center -- was very loud and caught the attention of the security guard," George Arango of the Miami-Dade Police Department said."My officer saw the backhoe driving to the ATM, and as he approached, the backhoe smashed into the ATM," Sergio Salas of All American Security Services said. The security officer told Miami-Dade police that the men were wearing ski masks and fled in a white truck."There was a gentleman who came out of the car and I believe he had a weapon at the time," Salas said. "The gentleman driving the backhoe ran into the vehicle and they fled the scene.""It's a bad day for this bank," a resident in the area said."I think they should put more security around or more cops in the area," a fellow resident said.By Tuesday afternoon, police and Bank Atlantic officials had removed the ATM machine.Investigators are not saying what images, if any, the surveillance cameras captured. According to police, the men are armed and dangerous.Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
