City of Miami Fire Rescue responded to a call from a distressed father, saying his wife had just given birth to their baby.

While on the way to a hospital, the father had to pull over on 12th Avenue and Northwest 46th Street. He asked a dispatcher how to care for his newborn while waiting for help to arrive.

"He needed something to tie the cord with," dispatcher Jasmine Fernandez said. "In a moment like that we need anything we can get so I said, 'Ask for a shoelace.' He asked, 'A specific shoelace?' I said, 'No, any shoe.' He grabbed the shoelace, tied the cord and waited for fire rescue."

The newborn is the family's third child and first son. He was named Kelly.

Officials said the baby and mother remain in a hospital and are doing well.
