MIRAMAR, Fla. -- A middle school student allegedly molested at school by his former art teacher took the stand Friday to testify against the man.Officials said that the Broward County School District teacher molested the boy for more than a year.Aaron Mohanlal, an art teacher at New Renaissance Middle School in Miramar, is accused of repeatedly sexually abusing the boy in a school supply closet when he was a 12-year-old seventh-grader.
Mohanlal is charged with numerous counts of lewd and lascivious behavior for allegedly sexually abusing the boy during the 2003-04 school year.Prosecutors allege that when the boy finally rejected Mohanlal's advances, the teacher sought revenge by posting fake fliers describing how the boy molested his dog. Some of the abuse happened in Mohanlal's home and car, prosecutors said.Prosecutor Anita White described Mohanlal not only as a teacher who abused his position and forced a boy to perform sexual acts, but also as a scorned lover. The boy's identity cannot be released because of his age and the nature of the charges, officials said.Mohanlal, 39, of North Lauderdale, gave the teen jewelry and a cell phone, a prosecutor said. They also used pet names as codes like Cheese, Pedro and Pablo.According to defense attorneys, the fliers allegedly hung up by Mohanlal are the beginning of the case. The boy was the victim of a practical joke by other students and didn't like it, they said. That's when the boy created the sexual abuse story, said Mohanlal's attorney, Steve Rossi.Mohanlal confiscated the fliers to defuse the situation, which is why they were in his briefcase at the time of his arrest, Rossi said.
