BISCAYNE PARK, Fla. -- A 3-year-old boy who has been at Holtz Children's Hospital at the UM/Jackson Memorial Medical Center campus after he was hit while riding his toy all-terrain vehicle nearly seven weeks ago went home Friday.
Adam Perez-Pinon has sections of his skin grafted and his limbs are in casts, but his mother Katty Perez-Pinon said that she was "so happy'' as she watched her husband lift Adam into a small child's wheelchair.
Doctors prescribed Adam methadone to wean him off the other medications he had been taking throughout his nearly seven-week stay at the hospital, which included a month in intensive care. The boy, a Biscayne Park resident, was riding a toy ATV on Jan. 2 with his brother when a car speeding through his neighborhood struck him; dragging him nearly two blocks as his parents ran behind screaming. The driver fled the scene.Katty Perez-Pinon said her son had gotten the plastic battery-operated vehicle for Christmas."One second he was fine and the next second he was dying," Perez-Pinon said. She said her son's injuries included: a broken arm and femur, a bruised pancreas, a dislocated shoulder and three broken vertebrae. He lost muscle in the back of his arm. He also went through six operations."We were all heart broken," Perez-Pinon said. "We just couldn't believe it."Perez-Pinon told NBC 6's Sharon Lawson that Adam spent the end of his hospital visit in a small room and that she kept vigil over him, showering in an adjoining bathroom daily.Doctors took skin from various parts of his Adam's body and used it in places it was needed. Burnt bones were repaired and doctors used three skin grafts on his scalp.Authorities said the driver who nearly took Adam's life has not been found but they are searching for an older man driving a late-model Crown Victoria."It would just make us feel better if the driver were off the streets," Perez-Pinon said.''Our family wants to thank everyone who has been there for us through this hard time," said Adam's father, Antonio Perez-Pinon.
