FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A South Florida community is in an uproar about a deadly shooting involving two Fort Lauderdale police officers.
The police union spoke out Monday, saying the investigation needs to take its course before anyone jumps to conclusions.
Dozens of Fort Lauderdale police officers gathered at City Hall on Monday to demonstrate solidarity with the officers involved in last week's shooting."Our community expects our public officials to judge incidents after all the facts are ascertained and not before. That did not happen in this case," said Jack Lokeinsky of the Fraternal Order of Police. "Under circumstances similar to these, elected officials have an obligation to attempt to diffuse, not incite the community. That did not happen in this case."The police union president was referring to a news conference held Friday in which city Commissioner Carlton Moore questioned the validity of the shooting. One man was killed and another was injured when police fired on the two men who were inside a stolen SUV and were suspected of carjacking."What matters is he is dead and there was not a weapon at the site to show the public that there was a need for this type of use of force," Moore said on Friday.Major Jim Noggle was at City Hall on Monday and criticized his fellow commissioner."You know, when an incident happens it takes a long time for the result of the investigation to come out," Noggle said. "To jump to conclusions that something was wrong was irresponsible and reckless."Moore responded Monday afternoon, saying he's only seeking the truth."I understand that individuals are going to question my actions. Just as they are questioning mine, I have a right to question theirs," Moore said. "I don't know what happened. I'm not saying that the police were right. I'm not saying that they were wrong. I am questioning the practices that we have in this city."Moore said it's a pressing issue because since June, Fort Lauderdale police have shot four people. The police said the department's investigation and a separate probe into the shooting being conducted by the FBI will reveal the truth in the case.Meanwhile, NBC 6's Ari Odzer reported that Moore is in hot water himself in an unrelated case. He was recently pulled over for speeding by a Broward Sheriff's Office deputy and was driving with a suspended license.
