Web Site Facilitates Transfers Of Cell Phone Contracts

Site Finds People To Take Over Your Contract

So, your cell phone reception is bad. You think you're paying too much every month, but you have a long way to go on your contract. Many have been stuck before, but NBC 6 found a way to legally move away from the contract and pick up a new phone.

Ashley Siudmak was happy with her cell phone reception, but her contract was costing her too much each month.

"I was going over my minutes a lot. I didn't have a lot of minutes. It was very costly," she said. "It cost me $200 to $300."

It was going to cost Ashley $200 to cancel her contract with T-Mobile. Then, she went to Celltradeusa.com, which matches up people wanting to get out of their cell phone contracts with others willing to take them over.

"I thought it was too good to be true," Siudmak said.

The Web site found someone willing to take Siudmak's cell phone and her 600-minute, $70-per-month plan.

The cell phone company was told both parties wanted to make the transfer and in a few days Siudmak was free, her contract gone.

"I love it. It's great. It saved me a lot of money," Siudmak said.

Eric Wurtenberg, one of the founders of Celltradeusa.com, came up with the idea after seeing many frustrated phone users trying to leave their cell phone contracts.

"The provider says, 'We will charge you a termination fee of $150 to $200.' What happened was the consumer had no one to take over the contract so they would get stuck," Wurtenberg said.

Celltradeusa.com charges $19.99 to have your phone and services transferred to another party.

Surprisingly, Wurtenberg said more people use the site to find service, not get out of contracts.

"Instead of a year or two years, they can take over a contract with maybe five months or four months left on a contract and a lot of consumers like that," Wurtenberg said. "They can potentially get a new phone, maybe a Bluetooth headset, and maybe save themselves a $35 activation fee if they had gotten a new phone."

Free of her contract, Siudmak went shopping on Celltradeusa.com to find her new plan with Nextel.

"All my friends have it," she said. "I love the walkie-talkie. I don't go over my minutes anymore."

When it comes to a transfer facilitated by Celltradeusa.com, Verizon Wireless said they will make the exchange.

"Both parties fill out the paperwork. One person saying, 'I don't want this anymore.' The other saying, 'I will assume it.' As long as the account is in good standing, that contract is theirs," said David Samberg, of Verizon Wireless.

Siudmak said she won't go into a phone store again. She kept her original phone number and when her Nextel contract is about to expire, she'll be shopping online.

T-Mobile told NBC 6 the Celltrade Web site circumvents the intent of the contract provisions that allow transfers to friends and family.

Cingular says the exchange can take place as long as the person taking over the contract has good credit.

Celltradeusa can't say exactly what percentage of users make a match because the cell phone companies conduct the final transaction.
