Julia Yarbough

Julia Yarbough joined the NBC 6 team in April 1998, as a general assignment reporter. An Emmy Award Winning journalist, Yarbough currently co- anchors the NBC 6 News at 6 p.m. with Tony Segreto and the CW News at Ten.Julia came to NBC 6 from KCBS-TV in Los Angeles where she served as weekend anchor and general assignment reporter. Prior to that, she worked in South Florida at WSVN-TV as morning and noon anchor. Julia began her career as an intern at KEYS-TV in Santa Barbara, Calif. before landing a reporting position in Pensacola, Fla., then moving to Louisville, Kentucky as anchor and reporter. Julia hold's a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of California at Santa Barbara. She also studied at Richmond College in London, England.Named Best Female Anchor by the Broward New Times in 2005, Julia's work has earned her professional and personal recognition. She is the recipient of an N.A.T.A.S. Emmy for the 2005 production of "South Florida 's Living Legacy." Julia's other journalism awards include the 2001 "Sunshine State Award" from the Society of Professional Journalists for "Special Places," a look at the inclusion of minorities in the National Park System and "Rails to Trails," an overview of the overseas heritage trail in the Florida Keys. Julia also received the Florida Historical Society's Best Documentary Award for "Port of Pensacola" as well as a Community Service Award from the Pensacola Rape Crisis Center.
During her career, Julia has had the opportunity to cover a number of major stories and events, most recently traveling to Torino, Italy for the 2006 Winter Olympics. Other big stories include the John Glenn 1998 Space Shuttle Discovery launch, Hurricane Georges in Puerto Rico and the Florida Keys, an environmental segment showcasing The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, taking a flight with the U.S. Air Force, Thunderbirds and having a one-on-one interview with Music Superstars Daryl Hall & John Oates, as well as appearing in the 2006 Summer blockbuster, "Miami Vice," directed by Michael Mann.When not chasing news, Julia, a native of Fairfield, California, stays busy with various community organizations and personal athletic pursuits. Julia serves as an advisory Board Member for the Fort Lauderdale Children's Theatre, serves as a hostess for the "Steinway Piano Gallery" talent showcase event, often serves as Hostess/Emcee for various community functions, serves as an advisory board member for the local volunteer organization, Hands On Miami, and is a founding member of the MBC, The Miami Beach Cinematheque, and has hosted the NBC6/T51 Health & Fitness Expo half-hour special for three years.In keeping with Julia’s interest in physical fitness, she serves as an ADVISORY BOARD MEMBER for the nationally based fitness website smashfit.com, which matches those interested in pursuing fitness with an appropriate physical trainer. Julia loves the outdoors and is also a contributing writer to “South Florida Adventures Magazine (southfloridaadventures.com) highlighting activities and adventures found right here in our own backyards. Julia has recently joined the team of writers with "South Florida Times" (sfltimes.com) bringing readers a similar glimpse into South Florida's outdoor treasures. Health, fitness, physical activity and travel are Julia's passions. Her interests include kayaking, running, weight training, snorkeling, skiing and biking. Julia has completed a half-marathon (13.1 miles) for the American Diabetes Association, several Duathalons and has twice completed the MS 150 bike ride for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.When not working or working-out, Julia is either cooking or poring over travel magazines researching the next adventure-travel location to explore!
