The exhibition kicked off its U.S. tour in Los Angeles on June 16, marking the first time the treasures of King Tut have visited America in 26 years. Close to 800,000 tickets were sold to the L.A. visit, and attendance in South Florida is expected to be in the hundreds of thousands, as well.

"Those who saw the show 30 years ago remember it as though it was yesterday, and it's not only the joy of seeing it now, but it's the memories they will have coming face to face with what are really remarkable ancient treasures," said Irvin Lippman, of the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale.

The Northern Trust gave 100 tickets to the exhibit to students from Data Charter School.

"I think it's awesome, because we got to experience something that has been around for a long time," one student said.

Fort Lauderdale is one of only four cities showing the exhibit. In May, King Tut's treasure will move on to Chicago, and then to Philadelphia.

Fort Lauderdale museum officials said more than 400,000 visitors are expected for the exhibit, which includes more than 130 artifacts from King Tut's tomb.

By 4 p.m. Tuesday, six hours into the first day of ticket sales, close to 13,000 tickets had been sold, NBC 6's Martha Sugalski reported.

Tickets are available by calling 1-877-TUT-TKTS and online at www.ticketmaster.com.
