  • 'ER' To Close After Next Season

Popular Drama Will End After 15 Seasons

    POSTED: 11:38 am EDT April 9, 2008

NBC said that it is closing the door on "ER" after next season.

The news came with the recent announcement that the Emmy-winning television drama was being picked up for a 15th season.

"'ER' is one of the greatest shows of all time and we can't wait to deliver to the audience the fantastic stories the series is known for," said Ben Silverman, co-chairman of NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios in a statement. "We will introduce new characters to the great ensemble."

According to USA Today, current cast member Maura Tierney will leave the show after a few episodes next season. The paper said that Mekhi Phifer has yet to sign a new contract, but John Stamos, Parminder Nagra and Linda Cardellini will be back on the show.

The popular drama has starred the likes of George Clooney, Anthony Edwards, Maria Bello, Julianna Margulies, Noah Wyle and Eriq La Salle over the years.

Executive producer John Wells told USA Today that he would like some of the former cast members to return and say goodbye before the finale.

Wyle appears to be the only certainty, though, since his contract calls for his return for four more episodes, the paper said.
