MIAMI -- Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning is one of the most famous transplant patients alive.
Now, the kidney transplant recipient is using his celebrity to promote a new Florida specialty license plate.
"I'm excited because I realize the impact of it," Mourning said. "I'm a living testament that organ donation saves lives, truly saves lives."The tag reads, "Donate organs. Pass it on." It was created and sponsored by The Transplant Foundation.A brother and sister who received donor livers were on hand Wednesday for a kickoff event."They were very lucky, both my kids, waiting for only two months each," said Susan Chediak. "They were very sick. They were very young."Meanwhile, Imani Jones is still waiting for a liver."It was 2005 when I was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis and it's been pretty rough because I have to take all these medications," Jones said. "I have to go in and out of the hospital sometimes.""It could be your child," said Jones' mother, Samantha. "No matter where you come from, it could come up at any time."Wendy Vaniglia's daughter Candi died at age 13. Her organs saved the lives of four others."It brings my family comfort almost every day, certainly every time we think of her and miss her," Vaniglia said. "We had the opportunity to meet the man who has her heart, which I can't tell you how powerful that was when he gave me the opportunity to feel her heart beating. Amazing."The specialty license plates are now available at South Florida license plate agencies. The tags cost $25 more than the standard. The proceeds will be used for organ transplant research, patient services and education.
