Wofford (4-8) At Charlotte (5-6)
GAME NOTES: The Charlotte 49ers will try to remain in the win column when they host the Wofford Terriers in a non-conference matchup from Halton Arena. After opening the season with a 4-1 record, the Terriers have hit a wall, losing seven consecutive matchups, including a tough, 79-69 setback to Elon back on December 20th. Today's contest will be the final installment of a five-game road trip for Wofford. The Terriers spent the entire month of December on the road and will finally return home to face West Virginia Wesleyan on January 3rd. As for the 49ers, they are fresh off their trip to Hawaii where they took part in the Rainbow Classic. Charlotte opened the tournament with a 20-point setback to Houston, but the team managed to win its final two contests, including a thrilling, 79-78 victory over Wyoming. Next up for the 49ers will be their Atlantic-10 opener against Dayton. In regard to the all-time series between the two schools on the hardwood, the 49ers have won three of the four meetings.
The Terriers' terrible 4-8 ledger is due to the team's atrocious play at the defensive end of the floor. Wofford comes into this matchup surrendering a whopping 81.5 ppg, while allowing the opposition to shoot 49 percent from the field. At the other end of the court, the Terriers are being led by Eric Marshall, who is averaging 15.7 ppg and 6.2 rpg. Shane Nichols and Drew Gibson have also made solid contributions, as Nichols is netting 15 ppg, while Gibson is posting 13.3 ppg. In the team's recent setback to Elon, the Terriers struggled again defensively, allowing the Phoenix to shoot 47.5 percent from the field en route to the 10-point win. The team also had trouble offensively, shooting just 38.6 percent from the floor, which included a 10-of-29 showing from long range. Nichols paced the team with 18 points in the loss, while Marshall tallied 17 points and Gibson chipped in 10.
As for the 49ers, their record can be attributed to the team's horrendous play at the offensive end of the court, as Charlotte is averaging a meager 68.7 ppg, while shooting a dismal 37.7 percent from the floor and an equally worse 29.8 percent from behind the arc. De'Angelo Alexander is leading the team with 18.6 ppg and is also collecting 7.4 rpg. E.J. Drayton has also played well, posting 13 points per contest to go along with a team-high 9.1 rpg. Leemire Goldwire rounds out the double-figure scorers with 11.7 ppg. The team actually put forth a solid effort on offensive its last time on the court, as the 49ers shot 40 percent from the field and connected on 18-of-24 shots from the foul line en route to a one-point victory. Alexander paced the team with 23 points and also collected eight rebounds, while Drayton tallied 19 points to go along with eight boards as well.
The 49ers are slowly coming around offensively and it is just at the right time. Wofford has been abysmal defensively and should have plenty of issues against a Charlotte squad that is starting to heat up.
