About The Philippe Cousteau Foundation
The Philippe Cousteau Foundation was founded in March of 2000 in honor of Philippe Cousteau by his daughter, Alexandra Cousteau. The Foundation is led
by Alexandra; her brother, Philippe Pierre; and their mother, Jan,
Philippe's widow.
The name Philippe Cousteau is synonymous with exploration, education and the
environment. Together with his father, legendary Jacques-Yves Cousteau, they
created a body of work that allowed people all over the world to glimpse the
wonders of life on what they called our water planet. The Philippe Cousteau
Foundation is set to carry on this vital work.
Guided by its mission statement, "To inspire a sense of stewardship for our
planet and create an environmentally sustainable future" the Foundation is
identifying critical problems facing our planet and forging alliances with
leading organizations around the world. These organizations include Harbor
Branch Oceanographic Institution, Marine Resources Inc., the Caribbean
Conservation Corps and many others, all of which are working toward creating
new technological and ideological methods for lessening the worldwide
degradation of our planet's resources and protecting ecologically important
areas and species.
The Philippe Cousteau Foundation is dedicated to five action items:
alliance, conservation, education, exploration, and restoration. Toward this
end, the Philippe Cousteau Foundation is actively involved in the
exploration of vital issues threatening the future of our planet and is
using platforms such as lectures, publications, films, and especially the
Internet to disseminate knowledge in an exciting way and inform mankind of
its vital role in the future of our water planet. The Foundation is
currently working on projects ranging from the creation of educational
programs for Schools around the country, sea turtle research, new waste
management methods, and Coral Reef Restoration Initiatives which are
developing cutting edge technologies to effectively restore damaged or
destroyed coral reefs.
Jacques-Yves Cousteau once said "we can find happiness in protecting the
world around us not only because we cherish it for its awesome beauty,
power, and mystery; but because we cherish our fellow humans, those who live
today and those who will live tomorrow, living beings who like ourselves,
will increasingly depend on the environment for happiness and even for life
itself." The Philippe Cousteau Foundation believes that there is hope for
the future, and it is this hope that gives us the drive to continue our
mission to inspire a sense of stewardship of our planet and create an
environmentally sustainable future.
